Thanksgiving

The Turners surprised us and flew us down for Thanksgiving this year.  We hadn't had a Thanksgiving with family since 2009 when we lived in New York City, so this was a real treat.  We owe it all to Sam! Look at that fan club:

Molly Kate was our official Thanksgiving florist, and made an incredible centerpiece out of a stalk of brussels sprouts, cranberries, and flowers.  Miss Creative.  Look at that beautiful corsage!

The weather was sunny and beautiful.  We did our own Turkey Trot and ran down Emigration Canyon, saw "Life of Pi" while Sam screamed at Grandma back at home all night, met 4-week-old baby Hayes, enjoyed a fancy roast beef dinner with the Oldroyds before they left for their Thanksgiving adventure in Mississippi, and ate lots and lots of my mother-in-law's famous pie. A successful trip.

Remind me next time to take a family picture. I'm kicking myself.

AVERAGE NIGHT'S SLEEP:  8-10 hours, with a whopping 11-hour stretch while in Salt Lake for Thanksgiving.


FAVORITE THINGS:
- SUCKING HIS HANDS + TOES
- STANDING UP (with help)
- WEARING ONLY A DIAPER
- NOT NAPPING To quote Grandma Turner: "I'm surprised how little he sleeps!"
- EATING EVERY HOUR AND A HALF (hence the foray into the world of solid foods)

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:  First laugh, dressed up for Halloween, first Thanksgiving, first taste of solid foods (LOVES butternut squash soup, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie), and discovered those cute feet and toes! 

PLACES HE'S BEEN:  Salt Lake City, Mukilteo, and antiquing in Snohomish (very cultured for his age).

WHAT MAMA LEARNED:
- The best days are the days when I can find JOY in the simple things.
- Let go of the OCD tendencies.  The house is never spotless, I usually have white splotches all over my clothes, and sometimes I go a week without really styling my hair.  I love that motherhood has helped me be more laid-back and focused on what really matters. It is very, very hard at times but those little gummy smiles make it heaven.

Bread.

My grandma Dorothy - who somehow, with 8 kids, made bread from scratch every week in that little oven.
Friends, I've found it: a successful recipe for homemade wheat bread.

No bread machine required.
No fancy wheat gluten required.

The hardest part about making this bread is waiting for it to rise (twice). 

Let me tell you, I have made several dozen BAD loaves of wheat bread.  I don't know if I can call them loaves - more like bricks of wheat.  I have had success with this recipe every single time... except for the time I forgot to put in yeast. In my defense, it was right after Sam was born (I didn't believe in "mommy brain" until that day).

WHEAT SANDWICH BREAD

1 c. warm milk
1/2 c. warm water
4 T. (1/2 stick) butter, melted + cooled
3 T. honey
2 c. bread flour (you'll want to get bread flour, it makes all the difference)
1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour (we use Bob's Red Mill, but any wheat flour works)
2 1/4 t. (1 envelope) instant or rapid-rise yeast
2 t. salt

Combine wet ingredients in a small bowl.
Combine dry ingredients in a stand mixer with dough hook. 
Add wet to dry with the mixer on low speed. 
Increase speed to medium-low, and knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes (you can add more flour if the dough is too sticky).  The dough will stick to the bottom of the bowl, but not stick to the sides of the bowl. 
Let rise in a warm place until doubled (1-1 1/2 hours).
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured counter and press into a 9" square.
Roll dough into a tight cylinder, and pinch the seam closed.
Place the loaf seam-side down in a 9" loaf pan, wrap with plastic wrap (coated with nonstick spray), and let rise until doubled (1-1 1/2 hours).
Brush loaf with 1 T. melted butter.
Fill an empty loaf pan with boiling water, and place next to your bread.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes, or until the center of the bread reaches 200 degrees.

Eat!

"G-ma"

My mom was going through Sam withdrawal, so she came up for a few days this past week.

The weather forecast did an about-face the day before Mom came.  Every time Mom comes to town it's sunny!  We took advantage of the beautiful weather and drove up to the Mukilteo Lighthouse for some fish and chips, and spent the next day in the beautiful historic town of Snohomish where we did some antiquing and Christmas shopping.

My mom kicked us out of the house her last night to go on a date - our first date since having Sam.  We made the mistake of going out for sushi and sitting at the sushi bar, which meant our meal only took about 20 minutes, so we tried to use up more time by stopping for hot chocolate and buying chapstick (the exciting life we live, you guys). Still, a much needed night out, if only for an hour and a half.  Thanks, Mom.

It was so much fun to have someone else with me during the day to go crazy over Sam's funny personality and new tricks.  Sam has never smiled or laughed as much as he did when she was here.  Grandmas are the best.  Love you, Mom.
